Which student loans are best?
I haven't done much shopping around and I don't really know where to start. Which student loans are the best? Where should I start researching student loans?

You want to find a loan where you can defer payment until after graduation. It's a big burden on a student to make loan payments while in school and can add extra stress.

Subsidized loans really are the best loans you can find, though. Everyone should apply for them before looking elsewhere for loans.

The amount you can borrow in Stafford and Perkins loans is limited. If you'll be needing more help than you can get through a Stafford or Perkins, you should look into PLUS loans first. You can borrow pretty much any amount, as long as you qualify, but the interest rates are higher than they are for the Stafford/Perkins loans. PLUS loans are available through private banks. You can ask your banker about them. Banks also offer their own student loans, but on all these you have to start paying them back pretty much as soon as you get them, and interest starts right away.

The government pays the interest on subsidized loans while the student is in school, so interest doesn't even accrue while they're still in school.

There are two types of subsidized loans, Perkins and Stafford loans. Perkins loans are really good because they have the lowest interest rate, usually 5%. Stafford loans are a little higher. There are also unsubsidized Stafford loans (interest accrues while the student is in school, but you can defer payment on it till after graduation), so you have to pay attention to what you're getting. These loans are given out to students through the school, so you have to apply for financial aid to get them.

Lots of websites have guides for loans/finding loans. The College Board, as usual, is a good resource. You should also check with the financial aid offices of the schools you're applying to because they seem to have a lot of information.
