3. Don't know anyone in the field? Do a quick yellowpages/google search of "psychologist" and where you live. You'll probably turn up numerous practices. Just email or call and say you're a high school student interested in psychology wondering if they have any tips on schools or activities. Many of them will be THRILLED to speak with you and maybe even let you watch them work or intern at their office. It never hurts to have contacts where you want to be, even if you never end up needing that summer job or a mentor.
4. If you've found several colleges you like (through their mailings, college fairs, college visits, etc), write to their psychology departments. If you can't easily find contact information, someone in the admissions office will always be happy to connect you. Ask them where their focus is and what they're doing for research. If they've only got three faculty members and they aren't doing any research and can't or won't tell you about their members' specialties, odds are it's not a great program to be in.

Hey Leslie,
That depends on what area of psychology you're interested in. A lot of programs focus on one aspect (ie, animal behavior or children or research or applications) and the most important thing is to find one that does most of its work in something you're interested in! Keep in mind that although it's important to have good professors in your area of interest, it's also really important to have a good overall college experience. To that end, here are my suggestions:
1. Talk to your guidance counselor. He/she has seen a lot over the years and can probably direct you several good schools.
2. If you know anyone that works in psychology, give them a call or email them! Ask what the best programs are (they'll know from reading professional journals and people they've worked with). They can also give you a unique perspective on the undergrad and graduate psychology experience.
