I think one good strategy is to consider industries that are growing quickly and try to find a job in those industries. For example, online advertising is a booming industry right now and will grow for many years. If you could get a job in that market, your long term prospects would be great and you would likely end up doing well financially in the long term.

In the short term, high paying jobs tend to be reserved to certain sectors. If you have an engineering degree, for example, you can often get a high paying job in software or working in finance. If you don't though, you will need to work for a few years before you really start making lots of money.

One additional thing to note is that I don't think you should pick a job or career just for the money. If you work hard and are in a field you love chances are you will be more successful and over the long term if you are successful in a field you will make lots of money.
