Queen of the Nerds, you are exactly right.
We start everyone out at 100 points to get them going. We want to encourage high-quality responses and this points system is the best way to keep track of credibility. And, as you mentioned, this forum is designed with a singular purpose in mind: to get answers. Hence, PrepMe Answers.

The points are starter points. I've noticed that when I ask a question, I lose points. But when I answer a question, I gets points (I get more for higher-rated responses). Therefore, my take is that this process is designed to lend credibility and trust to those with high-quality answers.
And, also, if you start out at 0 and you ask a question, then you'll get negative points. That wouldn't be too cool.
