I always spend a long time on essays, but they usually turn out to be poor quality anyway. I also never feel like doing them in the first place so I don't always put much effort into them. Does anyone have tips on how to better motivate myself to do better on essays?

A good starting point would be to think about who exactly will be reading your essay. Analyzing the audience and using certain words or jargon that specifically target those people will make your essay more interesting to read. Another general tip to draw interest is to use a wide-ranging vocabulary and to vary sentence lengths.
Be sure that your essay has a nice, flowing structure so that whoever is reading it can easily follow what you're saying. Generally in your introductory paragraphmyou want to explicitly state a thesis, or the main claim or idea. This will convey clearly to the reader what you're about to argue throughout the rest of your essay. It may also be a smart idea to just briefly talk about a few points in the introduction that you will be developing more in the subsequent body paragraphs. This not only helps the reader, but it will also serve as a very useful guide for you while you're writing so that you can organize your ideas more easily. Then in each body paragraph, you want to make sure that what you talk about directly relates back to the thesis from your intro so that you don't stray too far off topic.
Keep in mind that essays are a form of self expression so write in a style that is most interesting and fun to you!
