My mom was just diagnosed with Graves Disease. Does anyone else have that?
I just found out my mom has Graves Disease today. She said not to be too worried but if something has a name and they call it a disease it makes it sound really bad. Does anyone know someone who has it? I'm a little scared so anything you can tell me would be great.

Hi,

I'm really sorry to hear about your mother. Don't worry! Even though it's an uncommon condition there are ways to treat it. Your mom can get medicine and other treatments that will make her thyroid function normally over a period of time. Some people even go into "remission" from the condition naturally...I don't mean to scare you with that phrase since people usually use that with cancer and this isn't cancer.

Just support your mother as she gets treatment and make sure she and the rest of your family know that you're struggling too! It's important that you talk to your family about this so they can support you. I'm sure your family doesn't want you to be scared, so the sooner you can tell them the sooner you'll feel better.

my friend's mom had that. Dont worry, she was fine after a year or two. Basically from what my friend told me, her mom's immune system was attacking her thyroid glands. That's what produces hormones to change your metabolism and it was attacking it and making it make too much hormone. So that made her mom feel not good and then the immune system attacked other parts of her body but not that seriously. Some people have it more serious than my friend's mom.

There's a national organization for people who have the disease. You should go read up on it there and maybe they have some programs for children of people who have the disease. Like support groups or something.

I hope your mom is ok!

If it makes you feel any better, Barbara Bush had Graves Disease when she was in the White House. I know that makes me sound old but hopefully it makes you feel better :)
