How do I ask teachers for letters of recommendation to ensure that they are good letters?
Answers
Asking teachers to write letters of recommendation can be a tricky process. Ask a nice teacher that you don’t necessarily know well, and you may get a bland or so-so letter of recommendation. Most colleges require two letters of recommendation, one from a science or math teacher and one from a humanities teacher. Before selecting teachers to ask, it is important that students check with their school administration on how letters of recommendations are handled. Some schools will have the teachers drop off their letters in the counseling office to be sent along with other materials of the student’s application; others will have the teachers mail the letters themselves. Many students will ask their teacher from their junior year of high school because those teachers will have had a year to have gotten to know the student. The best time to ask those teachers is the beginning of senior year. This gives those teachers enough time to prepare their letters of recommendation and the student is still fresh enough in their memory.
