A lot of my friends have said that Washington University in St. Louis isn't as good as it's US News Ranking but it's gotten there because it just sends people lots of direct mail and tries to game the rankings. What do you guys think?

I think you are being a little harsh on WashU. It's a good school and it's better than Brown for sure! Carnegie Mellon is a great engineering school and it's good for sciences, but it's not that good for humanities.

Carl and Gerty Cori - husband and wife co-Nobel Prize Winners
William Glass - Novelist
That's just a few of them. There's no need to hate on WashU. It's a good school in a nice city - St. Louis has some awesome sports teams and from what I remember, the people are really friendly!

WashU is way overrated! #12. Come on. There are some awesome schools that are ranked below WashU: Rice, Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, and Johns Hopkins. The only thing that's great at WashU is their medical school. Their undergrad program is more like Tufts or Brandeis. It's not Top 15 for sure. Neither is Brown for that matter.
Wow, I'm amazed no one brought this topic earlier. I think everyone knows WashU is a good school but it's not up there with some of the other schools. I agree with the other poster that Brown is only on there for being an Ivy League. That's a sports league guys! It means nothing about the academic quality.
I don't know to judge if it's overrated or not. Do you really care that much about the US News Rankings? I don't know anyone who went to WashU so I really can't comment on it but I think the US News Rankings are lame anyway.
No, Washington University is a great school. One of my best friends is going there and it's very competitive and hard to get into. They may not be the most famous school in the country but for a lot of Midwesterners, it's a great school to go to. I'd say in the Midwest it's better than Northwestern.
I don't think it's overrated. I know some really smart people who went there. It's probably the 2nd or 3rd best school in the Midwest.
