I've always been really good at grammar and spelling, but I'm not very good at writing essays. I'm focusing on the ACT because of that, but some of the schools I'm applying to ask for an SAT score. That means I have to do the writing portion and I'm okay at the multiple choice section since I can handle that sort of stuff, but my essay is sure to bring down my score. How important is the essay for determining my SAT score?

The essay counts for about 30% of the writing section grade, and the multiple choice counts for the other 70%. I read it on the SAT website.
I'll bet you did fine because I took it in seventh grade for the Duke TIP and felt confident about it
well, everything is important on the SAT, but even though you should try your best with things, you shouldn;t worry about them. So just try your best and you shouldn't worry about it.
Don't worry too much about the writing section. It is worth some, but in reality the test graders are very hollistic about the grading. What it usually comes down to is how the grader really feels about your essay. Pretty much if you write a lot of BIG words down and sound all smart and use the semicolon correctly if you do use it and you'll be just fine. Also obviously the organization and all that but you don't have to be an extremely good writer to get a good score. My source is my english teacher and a substitute teacher who also grades SAT essays. (and each one in 10 secs. What does that tell you...). The writing section is still new so until it gets better thats how it is graded. Don't worry you will do fine!
I'm pretty sure the essay is like a quarter of the writing section score. I wish it counted for more though because I'm a good writer :\
it is important cause they want to see how creative of a writer you can be and plus it shows how well your penmanship is
