How do I forge relationships with teachers?
How do I get my teachers to like me? How do you form good relationships with teachers? A couple of my teachers are really good teachers so I want them to write recommendations for me, but it doesn't seem like they like me or would write a recommendation for me. What should I do?

In general, I think students are afraid of teachers. Students should not feel threatened by their teachers. As a former educator, I know that teachers are merely educators looking to make a difference in their students' lives. So, treat them nicely, make connections with them by working hard in class and showing effort, and get to know them.

In your specific case, I would approach your teachers after class one day about writing a letter of recommendation. Make it as easy as possible for them--attach a resume of your HS credentials with your recommendation request and make sure to give your teacher a stamped envelope so they can easily drop off your resume in the mail.

For most teachers, it's just about reminding them of what you've accomplished in their class. Your HS resume will help to do that.

Teachers like students who take initiative. I built a really good rapport with my History teacher by talking to her after class daily about current events and how they tied in to what we were learning. This way, she knew I was going above and beyond what was asked, and it showed her that I was genuinely interested--which was all true.

First, try to get very good grades. Once the teachers know you're serious about learning, then they'd be happy to sign any recommendations. Also raise your hand more in class, talk to the teachers more, and try to be a little more friendly with them. That should do it...

Just do your work and get good test grades, interact with the teacher and group discussions, answer most questions correctly, and have a good attitude. The key to having good relationships with teachers is plain out good attitude.

Stay after school and just talk to them about your life and things like that.
