The attitude at most schools is that they don't want their students to be unhappy studying something just because they committed to it upon application. Students wil change their mind a lot after their freshman year, or even their sophomore year, so it's usually fine to be undecided for a while.

Use your first year to figure out what you want to study, and then devote yourself to it until you graduate.

I think a lot of you are forgetting that every school has fields that it is better at than other fields. You should at least have an idea of what you want to study (like do you want to do pre-law or the humanities? Chemistry or english?) That will help you know what schools to apply to.

In American universities, they don't care all that much if you're not sure what you want to study when you apply to school. You can just fill in undecided for the major slot on the applications. In fact, lots of schools encourage students to explore academic options after enrolling.

On the other hand, if you think you might be interested in a more technical field like pre-med or an engineering field, it's a good idea to begin those majors in your first year. They require a lot of regimented work and sequenced classes at most colleges, so it's hard to switch between them and still only be in school for 4 years.

Most schools that i'm looking at don't require you to declare a major until after your freshman year or sophomore year. Even then, you're allowed to change your major after that.

Lots of American schools look kindly on "intellectual curiosity." That is, they encourage exploratory study so that each student finds his/her area of expertise and interest, and pursues that. They don't want their students studying something they don't want to study because then they won't be doing their best work. i think this makes sense, so i'm not really worrying about finding a major yet.

Since you know you're not going to study math or science, make sure you look into schools that have good humanities and social sciences programs. You don't want to end up at a school like MIT if you don't want to study math or science. Although, it would be unlikely for you to get in to MIT unless you said you wanted to study math or science...

British schools, and i assume, other european schools make you apply with a major selected, which is pretty rough. I know some people who are applying to some british schools like oxford and theyre kind of panicking because they don't know what to study. in general, it's probably a bad idea to apply to a school like that if you dont know what you want to do, but whatever floats your boat i guess...
