Typically colleges put more weight on a student’s GPA than SAT/ACT score. It would seem reasonable to assume that colleges and universities prefer students with a higher overall GPA and a lower SAT/ACT score than a student with a high SAT/ACT score and a lower over all GPA score. To colleges, a student’s GPA is a greater indicator of how a student will do academically since it is based on a student’s performance over time. Standardized tests only indicate that a student is able to take a certain type of test. While the SAT/ACT may demonstrate certain abilities, some students just aren’t very good test takers. However, many schools understand that there are factors that also contribute to having a lower GPA, such as taking more challenges classes, being more involved with extracurricular activities, and they do take these factors into account when considering an application.
