Generally, math classes will only require laptop usage if you're using a software program that deals with the material you're learning. For the most part, pen and paper is sufficient to get you through your math class. Although, I do know that some tech savvy kids type up their math hw using Mathematica - just to make things look nice.

Laptops aren't necessary, unless you like having an outlet to keep yourself from falling asleep in class.
