I get three days off from school this year to go visit colleges. Should I go on an official day or schedule my own visit?

Whether you should plan your own visit or check out an official visit day depends on a lot of factors. The first thing you should consider is your schedule. Obviously, you shouldn't miss a major exam just to attend an official visit. Then consider how much you know about the school. Is this a visit just to see what the school is about, or is it in your top three? Official visits are very good for if you're not very familiar with the school. You'll get a full campus tour, probably get to taste the dining hall, and get to see lots of presentations describing the atmosphere of the school and any programs you're interested in. If you're shy, this may also be your best shot to have a deep discussion with current students or figure out what kind of student the school attracts (could you see yourself being friends with the people who are also visiting?). A private visit, on the other hand, can be much more useful if you're already sold on the school to some degree, and want to visit to check out specific aspects of the school or make a decision. For instance, you're more likely to be able to sit in on a specific class or meet a coach or professor if the school isn't already swamped with prospective students. You may also want to call the college admissions office and ask about planning your visit. Are they helpful? Do they offer you suggestions?
