This summer I plan to take a pre-college program involving science and engineering at a local university. i don't get any college credit for it, but its still a rigorous course, with much research and a science fair project. will it make a big difference on my college application? also theres another program the same universtiy is offering that introduces high school students to the rigor of college math (calculus, etc). i dont get college credit for this either. which one should i choose. i'm a tiny bit confused.

If you're interested in doing something like this, it should only be because you're interested in it. I've been doing a "gifted" summer camp for 6 years where you take an abbreviated version of a college course, and this year I'm planning to do a precollege program at Brown. Personally, I always choose to take classes that just sound interesting to me, and I've never understood why some people take classes that they'll be taking in school anyway unless they were trying to pass out of it. So, I'd go for the engineering class; it sounds like more fun.

It really depends what you go into but doing calculus can only help you. I think that any high-level engineering will involve at least a basic understanding of calculus. Just my two cents.
Other than that, I think these programs are worth it if you really take advantage of the coursework for either (A) getting ahead in school or (b) doing something cool you can write about in your college apps to shine. I guess if you did some really interesting research then that could help you stand out. Gluck!

Yes, I think anytime you are taking challenging coursework, it is worth it. Personally, I would think doing calculus if you haven't already done it is more useful at this point. You should do science lab courses at a school which has great facilities and resources so if your local college doesn't, it may be a waste of time. Go math!
